Create your Landing page
Welcome to Chapter 3. We’re going to set up your competition landing page. This is one of the most important parts of your competition because it’s the place everyone will be directed to when they sign up.
We’ll talk later about the testing we’ve done using Facebook’s built-in sign-up forms. We’ve tried them, but we’re not fans. We much prefer sending people straight to the landing page on our website. Creating a proper landing page keeps everything smooth, reassures people that you’re a genuine business, and gathers all the data you need when they sign up.
Creating your landing page
On the links page, you’ll find links to both the Level 11 and Timeless Images sign-up pages. There’s also a checklist showing what to include, and PDF screenshots of both pages if you prefer to view them that way.
Your page must be mobile-first. Around 90% of people visit via their mobile while scrolling on the sofa in the evening, so you need to hook them within two scrolls. The top content has to grab attention. The page must still work well on a computer or laptop, but mobile and tablet optimisation is non-negotiable.
Page structure
The layout is simple:
- A hero image at the top, just one. Don’t overload the page with lots of photographs. Choose a single strong image you love.
- Bullet-point information explaining what they’re signing up for.
- Details of the main prize and runner-up prizes.
- The sign-up form.
- Terms and conditions.
We’ll break these down further.
Sign-up form essentials
Your form needs the following fields:
- Name
- Email address
- Phone number
- Due date (this is essential because it’s how we move clients through the system)
Rose also asks for home address because she posts vouchers. I don’t, and both approaches work perfectly well, so choose whichever fits your workflow.
If you’re using Light Blue (and there’s a separate tutorial for this), you can pre-tag entries. However you build the form, make sure entries can be tagged clearly: “Competition Christmas 2026”, “Competition July 2026”, or whatever naming system helps you quickly find them in your database.
Terms and conditions – absolutely essential
You must be crystal clear. Many people are wary of scams, upsells and hidden charges. Your T&Cs should clearly state:
- No digital files are included in any prize.
- Prizes aren’t valid for existing bookings.
- One entry per pregnancy. (People will try to enter multiple times.)
- Entering the competition adds them to your mailing list.
- They can unsubscribe at any time.
You should also explain exactly what the winners get:
- Main winner: a completely free shoot plus the wall art prize.
- Runners-up: a free shoot (worth £X) plus a premium canvas or framed print valued at £X.
Transparency is absolutely essential. Neither Rose nor I ever hide anything or try to make clients think they are receiving more than they are. We’re honest with figures, honest with clients, and honest about what this prize includes. Clients must always know that they’re welcome to enjoy their prize and buy nothing extra if they choose.
Seasonal landing pages
The great thing about building your page this way is that you can switch it on and off for each season. You can also duplicate pages to make life easier.
For example, we both have two landing pages:
- A Christmas / New Year “New Baby” competition page
- A Summer Newborn competition page
They are identical except for dates and seasonal wording. You can simply reactivate the same pages each year—update the dates, switch visibility on, and launch.
If you’re using Light Blue
There is an extra section called 3A. Rose walks you through:
- Setting up the form inside Light Blue
- Adding automation
- Embedding the form on your webpage
This allows your webpage form to feed automatically into Light Blue. Entrants see a confirmation webpage straight away (“Thank you for signing up – click here to follow us on social media”). They also receive an automated email confirming their entry and giving the draw date.
If you don’t already use Light Blue, there’s a link and discount code in the resources section.
